About
About Invest in Sleep
Written by one person, sourced from first-party UK documents, and honest about what it does not know.
Invest in Sleep is written and maintained by Mark Flanagan. It exists because the mattress industry publishes a great deal of checkable information that rarely gets checked.
Who writes this
Mark has spent around thirty years writing and publishing online, and runs several independent UK reference sites. He is not a clinician, a sleep scientist or a bed retailer, and this site does not pretend otherwise.
What that background does bring is the relevant skill for this particular job: reading published terms carefully, tracing claims back to their source, and noticing when a confidently stated figure turns out to rest on nothing.
How the research works
- Brand facts come from the brand. Guarantee thresholds, trial lengths and slat requirements are taken from each company’s own UK terms — not from another website quoting a website. Where a figure lives on a care page rather than a guarantee page, we go and find it.
- Regulation comes from the regulator. Consumer rights from the Consumer Rights Act and Trading Standards guidance; advertising rules from the ASA and CAP; standards from the standard itself.
- Evidence comes from the studies. Where a claim rests on research we cite the study, give the sample size, and say plainly when it is small or old — because a good deal of it is.
- Everything is dated. Terms change with promotions. Each page records when it was last checked.
- Gaps are stated, not filled. When a widely-repeated figure cannot be traced to a first-party source, we leave it out and say why. There are several examples of this across the site.
What this site will not do
We do not claim to have tested mattresses. We have not slept on them, and pretending otherwise would be both dishonest and, since July 2026, against Google’s published rules on reviews. What we offer is documentation and comparison.
We do not give medical advice. No mattress, pillow or supplement sold in the UK is licensed to treat anything. Where a topic touches genuine clinical territory — back pain, insomnia, anything involving medication — we describe what the evidence shows and point you to a GP.
We do not repeat unsubstantiated claims. Antimicrobial percentages from laboratory dishes, cooling figures without a test protocol, replacement intervals with no study behind them: these get reported as claims and examined, not passed on as fact.
How this site is funded
Invest in Sleep carries advertising. Advertisers have no say over what is written, no advance sight of it, and no relationship with the editorial side. Reference pages that assess the industry’s own claims are kept free of commercial links entirely.
