Toppers and protectors

A protector is the cheapest way to keep a guarantee alive. A topper cannot fix a sagging bed. Both are sold as though the opposite were true.

Two products, two entirely different jobs, routinely confused in the same aisle.

Protectors: the cheapest insurance in the bedroom

Every mattress guarantee we have read excludes a mattress that is stained, soiled or unhygienic. TEMPUR’s wording covers a mattress that is “very stained, soiled and/or otherwise unhygienic”. DreamCloud lists “burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage, or stains”.

So one spilled drink can end a ten-year guarantee on the first night. A protector costs a small fraction of the mattress and is the single most cost-effective thing you can do to keep the cover intact. Fit it before the first night, not after the first accident.

Be sceptical of antimicrobial claims

Copper and silver-treated protectors are marketed on laboratory results that have not been shown to transfer to real-world use. The ASA upheld a complaint against a copper-based product in 2020 even though the advertiser held genuine, quantified, pathogen-specific lab data — because the testing did not account for moisture, temperature or repeated washing in actual use. A mattress protector is a harder case still.

Toppers: changing a bed you already own

A topper can make a firm mattress feel softer. It cannot make a soft or sagging one feel firmer — that is the direction people most often want and the one that does not work, because you are adding a compressible layer on top of a surface that is already giving way.

If a mattress has developed a permanent dip, a topper will follow the dip. It is worth checking first whether the sag is deep enough to be a guarantee claim: brand thresholds run from 2cm to 4cm, and Simba requires 7cm between years five and ten. Those figures are collected on the UK bed facts page.

What to check before buying either

  • Depth. A protector must fit the mattress depth, and a topper adds depth your fitted sheets have to cope with.
  • Whether it affects the guarantee. Some brands specify what may be used on top of the mattress.
  • Washability. A protector that cannot go in a domestic machine will not get washed.
